Mountain Biking in Gisburn Forest

Come along and try biking off-road in the beautiful surroundings of Gisburn Forest where you can enjoy traffic free, well signed, family friendly trails, perfect for beginners and experts alike. The enthusiastic team from Cycle Bowland will be stationed at Gisburn Forest all day offering bike hire, off-road riding trips and advice on where to ride.

From a Tree to a Spoon

Harvest some coppice sycamore and make your own spoon to take home from green wood using simple hand tools, (tools and tuition provided), suitable for 12 years and up.

Environment Day Event

A special open day in Bleasdale as the Parish Hall celebrates the opening of its new breathing spaces garden and woodland. Learn how local communities can help look after the environment and harness alternative technologies, as well as caring for their natural and cultural heritage. Includes 11.30am Health Walk & Tramper Trek, 1pm Bleasdale mini cycle tour, 2.30pm Tramper Trek, 3pm Renewables Tour.

Tewit Chick Walk – looking for young lapwings

Bowland’s farmland is home to nationally important populations of wading birds. Lapwings or ‘tewits’ as they are known locally, curlews, redshanks and oystercatchers can all be seen at close quarters on their breeding grounds and we may even catch a glimpse of a brood of tiny lapwing chicks. Learn how local farmers and the RSPB are working together to conserve these beautiful birds.

A Downham Dendrology: The landscape and mystery of trees

A guided circular walk taking in fields, woodlands and a panoramic view from the top of a hill. The trees of Downham’s fields, woods and hedgerows will be explained in the context of the estate’s long-term woodland management and their place in the landscape. A chance to hear some lesser known facts and fictions about familiar native trees.

Farming the Environment

New Laund farm is part of the Duchy of Lancaster Estate in the Hodder Valley. The Farm lies on the limestone reef knolls, which give it a very characteristic and dramatic landscape. You will be taken around the farm on a tractor and trailer and shown how modern farming methods are being combined with good environmental custodianship to look after this unique and special part of the Forest of Bowland. The view from the top of the knolls is not to be missed! Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Badger Encounter

A chance to see badgers in their natural habitat from the comfort of a purpose built hide with an expert from Lancashire Badger Group. This event is extremely popular and places are limited due to the size of the hide, be sure to book early to ensure your place.

Music of the Fells

Come to Christchurch – the Shepherd’s Church - in Abbeystead for concert of local music. The Gladly Solemn Sound, comprising 24 singers, specialise in rural church music of the early 1800s. Combining florid counterpoint, earthy harmonies and vigorous rhythms, This West Gallery Music earned the disapproval of Victorian church reformers, who suppressed it in favour of a more decorous style - as described in Thomas Hardy's Under The Greenwood Tree. Local manuscript collections (from Georgian Wyresdale, Slaidburn and Downham) provide much of the choir's repertoire. The Shepherd’s Church is so called for the stained glass windows which depicting pastoral scenes will also have on show the instruments used by the parish band in the early 19th century.
