Introduction to fly-fishing

Discovery the art of fly fishing at Stocks Reservoir. You will be introduced to the reservoir and receive some basic tuition in entomology and watercraft, and watch a fly-casting demonstration before receiving over an hour’s expert tuition in fishing and casting. You will then have another two hours to try your best to catch your own trout! Complimentary refreshments on arrival.

From Clay to Brick ‘A’ – Quarry tour, factory visit and carve your own brick

Ever wondered how bricks are made? Now’s your chance to tour a Claughton brick factory and follow the last working aerial ropeway that carries buckets of shale down from the quarry. Followed by an opportunity to carve your own brick with ceramic artist Julie Miles. All materials are provided.

Ancient Woodlands and their special birdlife

Join the RSPB for a walk through the stunning ancient woodlands of Roeburndale. Learn about the special bird species such as pied flycatcher, redstart, cuckoo and green woodpecker that depend on this rare habitat. A local bird ringer will also be ringing fledglings from nestboxes provided by the woodland owners. Learn how bird ringing provides us with essential information that can help conservation.

A walk from the Wyreside Fishery to Dolphinholme and back to the fisheries café for refreshments (at own cost).

A Downham Dendrology: The landscape and mystery of trees

A guided circular walk taking in fields, woodlands and a panoramic view from the top of a hill. The trees of Downham’s fields, woods and hedgerows will be explained in the context of the estate’s long-term woodland management and their place in the landscape. A chance to hear some lesser known facts and fictions about familiar native trees.

Wet is Wonderful – waders and other wetland birds

The floodplain of the River Ribble between Settle and Long Preston is home to important wetland wildlife. With help from the RSPB and Natural England, farmers here are managing these habitats to benefit tumbling lapwings and drumming snipe. Walking beside the river, we will explore this new wetland and hope to see some of the special birds that live here.

Badger Encounter

A chance to see badgers in their natural habitat from the comfort of a purpose built hide with an expert from Lancashire Badger Group. This event is extremely popular and places are limited due to the size of the hide, be sure to book early to ensure your place.
